The All-Africa Students Union (AASU), the umbrella students' body in Africa, has elected new executive to steer the affairs of the Union which had been in a state of despair for years.

The new student leaders were elected at a Congress in Accra which saw Ghanaian, Fred Awaah emerge as the Secretary-General with Mr. Mohammed Sallah of the General Sudanese Students Union emerging as President.

These were contained in a press statement issued in Accra which is published below.

PRESS STATEMENT ISSUED BY THE ALL-AFRICA STUDENTS UNION (AASU) ON 2ND AUGUST, 2012 AT THE UNIVERSITY OF GHANA.

Friends from the media, we have convened this press conference to brief you on the just ended Congress of the All-Africa Students’ Union.

For those of us who are not familiar with AASU, it is the single largest continental students’ Union in Africa. Since its inception in 1972 at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, the Union has made tremendous contributions towards student and youth development in Africa. Amongst these, are the numerous researches conducted in the areas of HIV/AIDS and funding of tertiary education.

The All-Africa Students Union (AASU) has successfully ensured a long anticipated transition and has therefore elected a new set of leadership to steer the affairs of the Union in the next four years at the just ended congress in Accra – Ghana from 29th July to 1st August, 2012.

It should be noted that for a long while now, the Union has struggled to convene a Congress. The just ended Congress was made possible with the support of the Government of Ghana and the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS).

The election process which was supervised by Ambassador Commany Wesseh a former Ag. Secretary General of AASU and now Minister of State in the Republic of Liberia, ushered in an 11 member committee headed by Mr. Mohammed Sallah from Sudan as President of the All-Africa Students Union and a five member secretariat headed by Mr. Fred Awaah from Ghana as Secretary General.

The other officers of the AASU Secretariat are;
• Deputy Secretary General Mr. Richmond Neufville (Liberia National Students Union)
• Sec. for Finance & Admin. Mr. Edem Amou (National Union of Togolese Students)
• Sec. for Press & Information Mr. Rogers Sengoga (Kigali Institute of Science & Tech.)
• Sec. for Edu. & Democratization Ms. Isabella Murray (University of Zambia Students Union)

Meanwhile, the Union wishes to extend its appreciation to the six member country unions that oversaw the organization of this successful Congress. We also extend our gratitude to the Ministry Of Foreign Affairs And Regional Integration, the Ministry Of Education, Association of African Universities, Ambassador Commey Wesseh and delegates from the various regions of the continent for their support towards making the congress a success.

Also, we wish to humbly appeal for continued support of all stakeholders in our new found quest towards revamping the mother students’ Union in Africa.
Thank you.
Signed.

Awaah Fred (Mr.)
