Vet Vice President-designate in-camera, Osafo Marfo begs
Mr Kwesi Amissah-Arthur, who was the Governor of the Bank of Ghana, was nominated by President John Dramani Mahama Tuesday and is waiting to be vetted.
The Appointments Committee of Parliament has decided to hold the vetting on-camera.
But according to Mr Osafo Maafo, the vetting should be done in-camera to protect the dignity of the office Mr Amissah-Arthur will be occupying.
He said one could not predict the kind of questions he would be asked and is concerned the incoming Vice President could be subjected to embarrassing questions.
Mr Osafo Maafo was speaking in an interview with Kojo Oppong Nkrumah on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show Thursday.
The former minister explained that subjecting the second gentleman man of the land to scrutiny in the full glare of the public amounted to holding the office of Vice President in contempt.
“I want them to bear in mind the order of precedence in the constitution and the hierarchy of that office,” he maintained.
The Member of Parliament for Sene and a member of the ACP, Mr Twumasi Appiah was also unhappy with the development and called on parliament to reconsider its decision.
He could not fathom why chief justices as well as national security chiefs were vetted in-camera while the vice president would be vetted in public.
“As for the (public) vetting I beg to disagree…I think that it is only wise and proper…that as a vice president we (vet) him in camera," he insisted.
