Gov’t moves to restore deplorable sections of eastern corridor roads
A number of excavators, tipper trucks and other equipment have been dispatched to Bimbilla and Kpassa to cater for the situation temporarily, until the main construction works reach that section of the road.
Already, the Mobile Maintenance Unit of the Ghana Highways Authority have put the Nkwanta-Bimbilla and Wulensi-Bimbilla roads in good shape as commuters hitherto, had to do spent three or more hours on that stretch which now takes less than an hour.
Road users who ply the Kpassa-Nkwanta stretch are however waiting earnestly for the day they will also be able to transport their foodstuff and travel comfortably to and from these two important marketing communities along the eastern corridor road, without having their vehicles stuck in deep fissures on the road especially as rainfall rises in the area.
A truck driver who spoke to this reporter revealed he had chosen to use the Tema-Nkwanta to Tamale through Yendi road for the past twenty years because “it’s relatively shorter and safest than the Accra-Kumasi to Tamale through Kintampo section which has received much attention from successive governments over the years”.
He said the completion of the eastern corridor road will reduce the pressure and its related issues on the Kumasi-Kintampo-Tamale section and also boost the agric sector as the country depends mainly on the northern sector for its food and animal production.
Another driver, Baba Brimah Ali also stressed the need for government to have stop-gap road maintenance team stationed at Kpassa, Yendi or Nkwanta to respond to emergency calls on the road as one can get stuck between Kadjebi and Nkwanta or between Kpassa and Nkwanta for hours without any help, coupled with bad mobile network connections in the area.
Traders in Damongo were however in good spirit as the road linking their town to Bimbilla has been attended to by government, breathing life back into economic activities in the town and its surrounding communities.
