The Chief of Takoradi Osaahene Katakyie Busumakura the III, has bemoaned the practice in which legitimate chiefs are compelled to waste a huge chunk of their resources and time fighting legal battles against persons challenging their authority.

He has thus charged the Ghana Bar Association to play their roles effectively and deliberate on how best to minimize chieftaincy litigation particularly in the Western Region.

Osaahene Katakyie Busumakura the III made the passionate appeal to executives and members of the Ghana Bar Association, GBA, who called on him at his Palace.

The GBA was led by its President Frank Beechem, Vice President and other executive members who are in the Western Region for the Association’s 2012/2013 Annual General Conference underway in Takoradi.

The conference which will among other things elect new executives, commenced on Sunday September 16, and is expected to end on Friday September 21.

At a cocktail held in honour of the lawyers at his Palace, the Takoradi Chief who also has had to battle for his throne in court for many years, implored the GBA executives to deliberate on the impact of the legal profession on the stability and development of traditional society and authority.

“Your work as upholders of the faith in the rule of law is cut out for you and as someone with a passing acquaintance with the legal process I must say that your efforts as apostles of justice ultimately result in the rule of law prevailing eventually. I wish however that at some point in time you would give a thought to the impact of the legal profession on the stability and development of traditional society and authority.

“Chieftaincy litigation, especially in the Western Region has become a negative growth industry such that chiefs spend all their resources fighting challenges to their positions. Much as the rule of law must prevail, I would wish to appeal to you to use your best endeavour to ensure that there is an end to litigation, especially after the highest court of the land, Supreme Court has given final judgment”.

The President of the Association Mr. Frank Beechem thanked the Chief for hosting the lawyers in his Palace and assured him of the GBA’s commitment and readiness to play its roles more responsibly towards peaceful, free and fair elections in December.
