CODEO backs EC’s decision to register some Ghanaians abroad
The law to register Ghanaians abroad, ROPAL, was championed under the erstwhile New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration to get Ghanaians living abroad registered and be part of the electoral process. But that was vehemently opposed by the then opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Contrary to the law, the EC is limiting the registration to only those on diplomatic missions abroad and students on government scholarships.
The Member of Parliament (MP) for Manhyia, Matthew Opoku Prempeh who criticized the EC’s selective process, has threatened to frustrate the commission’s effort to go ahead with the registration exercise.
Meanwhile the National Coordinator of CODEO, John Larvie has said the EC should be given the chance to implement some aspect of ROPAL since the commission has very little time to register all Ghanaians abroad.
“I am saying [irrespective of ROPAL], we should bear with them [EC] because of the time and the resources that are constraining right now.”
He added that Ghanaians on diplomatic missions and those on scholarships are well known to the state and can be easily identified and registered.
