The Greater Accra Regional Minister and a member of the Presidential Special Task for Floods, Hon. Nii Laryea Afotey Agbo has hinted of an impending demolition exercise in parts of Tema very soon. He said since Tema was already a planned and developed city, there was no justification for people erecting structures at unauthorized places especially on water ways.

“The team will soon hit Tema with their tools to pull down structures that have been erected at wrong places and I’m happy that most people do agree with us to demolish the unauthorized structures,” he remarked.

Hon. Nii Laryea Afotey Agbo asserted that there had been limited flooding this raining season due to the massive demolition exercise that was undertaken last year. He said that more unauthorized structures have been earmarked for demolition to enable free flow of water through the right channels. “Government will not hesitate to pull down structures that have been erected on water ways,” he reiterated. He assured Ghanaians of the Task Force’s readiness to salvage the situation should there be any flooding this year. According to him, the team was working with all stakeholders and the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) to put things in order as the rains intensify.

Speaking to US News, Hon. Afotey Agbo, who is also the Member of Parliament for Kpone Katamanso, said the team was not waiting for any tragedy to occur before acting hence they were marshalling all the resources, albeit meager, and embarking on a series of activities to minimize the effects in the unlikely event that floods hit the country again this year.

He stated that as part of their preparations, the committee had launched a campaign for cleaning the environment and gutters and desilting of major drains to prevent flooding and thus relieve government of the needless expenditure associated with flooding each year. He added that since flooding was a problem to all Ghanaians, all must make it a point to support the Task Force just like NADMO, Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), the Military and other institutions have pledged to do.

He advised Ghanaians not to dump refuse in drains, but rather into the refuse containers provided by Zoomlion. He said when refuse is deposited in drains and other unauthorized places, it chokes the drain and contributes to flooding during heavy downpours.

He stated that any time there was flooding in the country, it puts a lot of pressure on the government as it spends more money providing items to the affected victims; funds that could be channeled into the provision of development projects.
