The Head of Public Affairs at the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC), Earl Ankrah has stated that the commission will not be able to further meet the demands of striking university administrators.

The Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA) declared a nationwide strike over unresolved issues relating to the migration of its members onto the Single Spine Salary Structure (SSSS).

The administrators say they have been pushed to take that decision because of what they describe as the unwillingness on the part of the authorities to put them on the structure.

However Mr Earl Ankrah, speaking to Joy News, indicated that the commission can only make offers based on their financial strength, saying they are currently constrained.

“They (the administrators) are just not satisfied with the figure we gave them… The money we are working with right now is not for FWSC… The money belongs to the tax payer so it is up to FWSC to ensure that we administer that judiciously.”

“We make offers according to what money is available to us. We’ve made it to a point where we think we can’t go any further and it’s as simple as that,” he maintained.

“University administrators are encouraged to take it in good faith and give their services to the people of Ghana.”

Mr. Ankrah, said the NLC - which has pronounced the strike of the university administrators illegal, will have to take the necessary action to get them back to work if they fail to accept the terms of the FWSC.

Meanwhile, the National Labour Commission (NLC) and the FWSC will be meeting striking university administrators next week to get them to return to work.

The FWSC is hopeful that the meeting will yield some positive results.
