Rwanda: Parents, Youth Disagree On Usage of Condoms
Kamonyi — Some of the parents say that their children should not buy or advice their children never to use condoms yet the children say that instead of falling into sexual temptations without protection, they have to carry condoms always.
This is the kind of confusion about the usage of condoms that is between the residents of Ruyenzi cell in Runda sector in Kamonyi district that we talked to on the 19th.June.2012.
Some of the old parents said that they would not dare buy condoms in a public place saying that when one buys them people start judging them and it is shameful. An old man with 6 children said that he cannot dare to buy it in a public place and that if he finds a condom with one of his children, he would be disappointed and it create a problem between them.
However youth think differently from them and instead they laugh at them and think they are old fashioned. They argued that if parents would be ashamed if they found their children with condoms, they wonder how they would feel if their child came home pregnant or infected with HIV/AIDS.
Youth say that they meet with many temptations and cannot be sure of being 100percent on abstinence and that's why they most of them have changed their perception on condoms though there is still a problem of those who do sexual relationship when they are drank or under the influence of drugs and don't think about protection.
The youth in this area said that the only way of protecting themselves from unwanted pregnancies, HIV/AIDS and other Sexual Transmitted Infections is the use of condoms if not abstaining despite what their parents think and argued that there are not ashamed of buying condoms when they need them.
