A book opened to receive contributions for the performance of the funeral rites of a deceased armed robber has led to the arrest of two other suspected armed robbers.

The deceased, who the police identified only as Akator, alias Lion, was allegedly killed in a shoot-out with the police on Thursday, August 9, 2012 at Opah, near Amasaman in Accra.

A subsequent swoop in the area last Sunday, August 12, 2012, led to the arrest of Yaw Posu, 27, alias Abenkwan, and Kwaku Tawiah, 29.

Items retrieved from Posu at the time of his arrest included the book which was opened to receive the contributions for Akator’s funeral, three mobile phones, 77 wrapped substances suspected to be Indian hemp, six boxes of machetes and GH¢18.50.

Three donors (identified in the book as King Two, Dada Two and Akatapore) had donated GH¢20, GH¢l0 and GH¢3 respectively as of the time of retrieving the book.

At the back of the Note One exercise book is written: Lion’s death: King Two Ghetto Rasta Boys, while the first page of the book has an inscription, “Funeral contribution of our late brother, Akator, aka Lion”.

Briefing the Daily Graphic newspaper in Accra last Tuesday, the Accra Regional Public Affairs Officer, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), Mr Freeman Tettey, said the Amasaman Police Patrol Team responded to a distress call at about 12 noon on August 9, 2012 that some armed men had attacked residents of Opah, near Amasaman.

He said upon reaching the scene, the armed men, numbering eight, sped off into the bush on their unregistered motorbikes after they had allegedly robbed the residents of some personal effects.

According to him, the police decided to leave two officers in the town, while the others left in two vehicles - one belonging to the police and the other provided by the complainant.

Mr Tettey said two of the suspected armed men, unknown to them that there were some police officers in the complainant’s car, allegedly opened fire on the car as soon as they spotted it along the route to Amasaman.

He said the police officers in the car returned fire and killed Akator instantly while the second suspect, who the police identified only as Sheriff, escaped with gunshot wounds.
