Mrs. Rawlings For President Will Be Disastrous For NDC - NDC Sec
A leading member of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) and member of Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) board Ben Allotey Jacobs, has stuck his neck out describing any future move by the former 1st Lady Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings to contest for the party’s flagbearship as disastrous for the NDC party.
According to the Central Regional Propaganda Secretary of the party, if the leader of the 31st December Women’s Movement should have any intention of contesting the sitting President for the ticket to lead the party into the 2012 elections, she would be making a big mistake.
Speaking during a panel discussion on Peace FM’s “Kokrokoo” programme on Wednesday, he said Ghanaians would not love to see Mrs. Rawlings leading any party, and that the idea that her husband being a former President and a charismatic leader might have a huge influence on her.
He told Peace FM that, the Rawlings’s have influence in the party and commanded a lot of respect, but the respect surrounding the two will be no more if they continue to champion such a cause.
He stressed that former President Rawlings and his wife are part of our history, adding that, they were living legends, especially Jerry Rawlings who has to an extent, changed the history and destiny of Ghana.
Mr. Allotey Jacobs admits, however, that he cannot challenge Presidential ambition of the Vice Chairperson of the NDC if she wants to, but would advise her to take her time and allow President John Atta Mills to complete his two terms, before declaring her intention to run for the Presidency.
He categorically told Kwame Sefa-Kayi, host of the programme, that he believed President Mills will easily win the flagbearship and consequently win the Presidency for a second term.“Mills is very hard”, he said.
It will be recalled that a youth group, during the commemoration of June 4 in Tamale, carried a banner which read “Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings for President 2012”, and a report that came out later gave the impression that business mogul and former Asante Kotoko CEO, Hebert Mensah had indicated that the former 1st lady intended to run for the presidency.
However,Hebert Mensah has refuted those claims, stating that neither Mrs. Rawlings nor her husband had disclosed any such intentions to him.
He added that he was not the campaign manager for Mrs.Rawlings and would never be.
He also revealed that he is not a registered member of the NDC.
