Sunyani Chiefs Fight Over BA University
THE CHIEFS of Sunyani, the Brong Ahafo regional capital, have expressed their frustration about the total neglect of the township by government as the town has not benefited from any new developmental project in recent times.
According to the Paramount Chief of the Sunyani traditional area, Nana Bosoma Asor-Nkrawiri II, Sunyani lived in its past glories as no new development projects had been initiated by government in the serene town within the past few years.
Nana Asor-Nkrawiri made this known when he met with a cross-section of the media in his palace in Sunyani recently.
The chief’s assertion is a clear indication that the much-touted ‘Better Ghana Agenda’ which was said to have brought about an unprecedented development across the country has not been in reality.
He lamented that the poor state of the roads and water system in the regional capital was nothing to write home about.
The Paramount Chief, who was flanked by his divisional chiefs and the Queen mother, Nana Yaa Nyamaa, called on government to intervene and ensure that Sunyani got its fair share of the national cake.
He stated that the water supply system in the municipality, which had seen no renovation and expansion since its construction in 1969, had virtually broken down and as a result residents depended on hand-dug wells and boreholes to survive.
Nana Asor-Nkrawiri also called for the continuation of the Sunyani ring-road construction project which had been abandoned for about 45 years now, saying “We need more roads because for the past 30 years, Sunyani has grown but the road network has not been expanded.”
The Paramount Chief also called for a new development system for Sunyani since the existing social infrastructure could not serve their intended purposes due to their poor state and increase in population.
According to the 2000 population census, there are 179,165 people in Sunyani. However, the municipality is deprived of access roads, and this is putting a lot of pressure on the few roads in the Central Business District thereby creating traffic in the city.
The regional capital has become the preferred conference centre for most organisations across the country due to its serenity; therefore there is the need to expand the roads and other social infrastructure to meet the current development trend.
