Four children, aged between three and six, were burnt to death under bizarre circumstances at Adweso-Abogiri, a suburb of Koforidua in the New Juaben Municipality of the Eastern Region, at the weekend.

The four died when the room in which they were sleeping caught fire, while their mothers had locked them in and gone out.

The cause of the fires is not yet known.

The Koforidua Police are hold ting the two mothers, Ama Nyamekye, 30, a meat seller from Asokore, near Koforidua, and Felicia Normenyo, 22, an egg seller and Togolese national resident at Abogiri, responsible. Each of them lost two children in the fire.

He said those around forced the door open which had been locked with a padlock outside, and brought the children out, and he drove them to the hospital.

He said Kofi Emmanuel was pronounced dead on arrival at the Koforidua Central Hospital, and the other three died later in the afternoon while the nurses and doctors were preparing to have them transferred to the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra.

Mr. Kisiedu said Jennifer Addo and Patience Dede died at about 2pm, and David Addo died at about 6pm.

The Assemblyman for the area, Dornelious Agbovor, who was instrumental in handing over the women to the police, told the Times that the children were badly burnt in a small room in the uncompleted building in which they were sleeping at Abogiri.

The Assemblyman said he heard of the incident at about 10am and rushed to the hospital.

He said from his personal interaction with the two mothers, he discovered that it was their negligence which caused the death of the children.

“When I spoke to them, they attempted to lie. They also failed to report the incident to the police. I therefore, lured them to accompany me to where the incident took place, but took them to the Police Depot at Galloway, and handed them over to the police,” he said.

Speaking to the Times in an interview, Ama Nyamekye claimed they left the children in the care of a 26-year-old man called Duodu at about 7am, after giving him GH¢4 to buy food for them, while they went to a friend to collect their mobile phone and GH¢45.

She said at about 10am, they had information that their children were burnt to death so they rushed home to verify.
