Adamu Daramani Sakande, Jailed MP In Critical Condition
The jailed Bawku Central MP, Adamu Daramani Sakande, was last Thursday rushed to the Cardio-Thoracic Centre at Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital from the Nsawam Prison following a heart-related condition.
DAILY GUIDE has learnt that Adamu Sakande, who felt unwell in prison where he is serving a two-year jail sentence, reported to the Nsawam Prison authorities about his condition and was asked to provide his hospital records.
No sooner had he succeeded in convincing them than his condition began to deteriorate, compelling the prison authorities to rush him to the Cardio Centre where he was immediately admitted and said to be in a critical condition.
His response to treatment is unknown, but the hospital authorities are doing their best to stabilise him.
Reports said the prison authorities wanted to chain him to his hospital bed as it’s done to hardened prisoners on admission but had to vary the standard because of the severity of his condition.
The decision to chain him to his bed was out of the fear that he could flee.
National Security operatives are however on a 24-hour guard at the centre.
Adamu Daramani Sakande was recently slapped with a two-year jail term by an Accra Fast Track High Court for holding dual citizenship.
The court ruled that he did not renounce his British citizenship properly before contesting the Bawku Central parliamentary seat.
The court found the accused guilty of perjury, false declaration of office for voting and deceiving a public officer.
His lawyers are appealing against the ruling.
Reports from Bawku in the Bawku Central Constituency said various aspirants were jostling to replace the jailed MP as the New Patriotic Party (NPP) candidate for the December 7 elections.
While some had indicated that it was immature for the various interest groups to be lobbying for the slot, campaign manager for the party in the constituency, Tanimu Abdulai, issued a week’s ultimatum to the party to name a compromised and suitable replacement ahead of the December polls.
The party is reported to be sharply divided over plans to hold parliamentary primaries to replace the embattled MP.
